July 1969

As I type the month of July 1969, the images of this life at the end of the 60's are strong in my mind.  This weekend has been one filled with new memories being made with new friends and recalling memories of the past with friends and family that have gone before us.

Yesterday, as we were enjoying a small party, I met a new friend who touched my soul.  She reminded me of other people and experiences in my life.  We shared stories and memories, and her spirit really touched me and inspired me to continue on this journey of memories that I've started.

Today, I listened to the great old music of the Carpenters, Bread, and the like, as I tinkered around at home.  Mom and Dad had brought boxes on their last trip of some dear old glass and dinnerware and it was time to see the treasure.  Then before I finally sat down to type, I filled bird feeders and trimmed flowers, smelling the fragrance of wild violets like the ones that were in Dena's yard.  I listened to the cicada's in the trees just like the ones we heard as kids on the starry summer nights at Dena and Daddy Dale's.

And now as I type, I realize that while I may not be sewing, cooking, and living the way Dena did in the late 60's, I'm making the same kind of great memories.  Life is good.

This is a DO OVER!

After much dismay, I am having to start this blog over.  I am not able to merge my two blogs together so I get to start Dena's Diaries over.  I am really disappointed in my follow-through.  5 years???  I started this one 5 years ago and didn't get very far.

But back on track!  I have to finish what I started AND I have to get these diaries documented.

I'm going to take a different approach and save them in Word docs first.  Then I will take my time updating the blog.  Slowly but surely Dena's diaries will be posted.  I made a promise to her and to myself.

The last post, I stated how disappointed I was in myself.  Now 5 years later, the disappointment lingers, but the intent is still there!  Good intentions, right?

Here's the Do-Over!  All of the previous posts in one!

Thursday, October 8, 2009

I am ashamed of myself lately…..starting too many projects at once has been the trend of late. From starting the documentation of Dena’s Diaries, to my booth at an antique mall, and all the “stuff” in between.

My life has been a hodgepodge of a mess over the last 20 months; but I feel as though I am back on track. After a lot of stress relief recently, I feel as though I can focus on the things I’ve started while enjoying a new life.

God has taken me on a journey that I had no idea I would take at this stage in my life. I turn 46 tomorrow. I hope my following years on this earth will bring me peace, fulfillment, new friends, family, and a sense of purpose.

The diaries will continue…..I need to relax…..Dena is calling me to speak for her again and document this simple life. (So that maybe I can enjoy being simple again myself.)

As I have been typing the first few months of my grandmother Dena's life in 1969, I realize how appreciative I am to have not typed these words until now. For the last 10 years or more it has been my goal to get these memories of Dena's into an electronic format. Little did I know that God had a master plan and that it would be in HIS time that I would make this a priority in my life. My last year has been challenging, stressful, and very busy. God had it in his plan to give me a reason to SIT. To be quiet. And to appreciate the most simple of lives...the one my grandmother led. Typing her diaries has given me a new appreciation for the years that she spent teaching me, my brother, and sister; for helping us practice our learning abilities with games, puzzles, school lessons, etc. And as she writes of the dresses, capes, and outfits that she spent hours sewing for me, I can recall each article with a vivid, colorful memory, the first day that I tried on each and planned with excitement the first time I would wear them. I thank God for giving me this gift of her life all over again; for blessing me with the memories, the experiences, the love of the simple things like whether it is snowing or raining, or whether she had the opportunity to rest. I hope the remaining 19 years are equally as inspiring.

As I continue to write/type Dena's diaries, I realize that to an unfamiliar reader, a lot of her words don't make sense. In fact, much of it doesn't make sense to me either. However, I am so enjoying seeing into the life of my grandmother; a woman who cared deeply about her faith, her husband, the kindergarten children she taught each year, and who took the time to do simple things like sewing a dress for me or cooking pumpkin bread on a day that she said to be "taking it easy". This process is giving me a whole new appreciation for the life she led, the love she gave to those around her, and the words she left behind.

Enjoying a snowy day at home; relaxing, reading, watching the flakes fall ever so gently. I had a longing for some comfort food...nothing better than my grandmother's banana nut bread recipe from years ago. Thought I would share:

3 ripe Banana's (about 1 Cup)

3/4 Cup Sugar

1/4 Cup Crisco

1 1/2 Cup Flour

2 Eggs

1 tsp Baking Soda

1/8 tsp Salt

1/2 Cup Pecans

1/2 tsp Vanilla

Set oven to bake at 325 degrees.

Mash banana's well and set aside.

Mix sugar, Crisco, eggs, baking soda, salt, and vanilla; mixing well. Add flour, mixing well; then put into well greased muffin pan or bread loaf pan. Bake until gently brown and toothpick comes clean in the center. (About 45 min. depends on your oven)

ENJOY!

Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.

So I've thought over the years how I would like to bring back the days of old by publishing my grandmother's diaries. What better way to do that than by adding them to a blog. I'm just getting started and still new to all of this. But I hope this site will be inspirational to many, an interesting retrospective of a day long gone, and hope that our future will be blessed with experiences that only God can provide.

Enjoy!
